CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND TESTIMONIALS

Give & Take

In these classes we will look for clarity and sensitivity in dancing together and cultivate a curiosity towards the unknown. We will practice basic contact skills such as falling safely, rolling point of contact and center awareness. There will also be space for group improvisations where we develop easy transitions in and out of physical contact, as well as solo work for exploration of personal movement vocabulary.
Katarina’s teaching supports play, exploration, and “beginner’s mind”. She is fascinated by the side of CI that allows us to simultaneously give and receive physical information – as in a handshake, or a hug.

Accidental Excellence
Or The Joy of Stumbling into Contact

This class is inspired by a verbal misunderstanding.  In a CI event that I was recently part of, an on-looker made a comment that I heard as "accident dances", when he really said "excellent dances".

I have noticed that, what can be perceived as mishaps in a dance often become an opening to deeper listening and awareness of the particularities of the dance I'm having right now.  So, in this class we will cultivate our capacity of being "accident-prone" - to stop trying to get it right and instead becoming more and more curious about where the principles of contact improvisation can take us moment by moment.

We will study; Falling (How does my body fall safely? Where is the edge of my
comfort zone? What kinds of falls make me laugh?)
Rolling point/Sliding point/ In and out of contact (How can these
concepts support my dance towards surprise and discovery? Can I
shift from making it happen to watching it happen? Can I find joy in
the moments of difficulty? )
Weigh exchange (How do I respect my own and my partner’s
limitations without letting "politeness" dull the dance? What are all the
micro-grades on my scale for giving and receiving weight?)

something." ~Ornette Coleman

The Art of Hanging in There

Visual artist Louise Bourgeois has described how  her creative process evolved from “the fear of falling” to ‘the art of falling”, and finally to "the art of hanging in there”.  From working with a dance piece inspired by this notion, I have developed a number of improvisational scores and minimalist choreographic phrases that revolves around the concept of counterbalance.

In this class, we will interweave improvised solo, partner and group scores with simple set phrases that support Contact Improvisations towards autonomy, momentum follow-through, and good old joy of dancing together (to music!).

Inspiration Explored

A workshop exploring instant creativity, using ideas from Contact Improvisation,

physical theater, and improvised performance work.

Dropping into the body and sensation, we will work with listening, timing, space

awareness and personal expression, on the look for that mysterious and subjective thing called inspiration.

Katarina's teaching supports collaboration, diversity of expression, and "beginner's mind". Her main guides in art making are vulnerability, musicality and deep play.

Hybrid

a workshop that intercrosses aspects of improvisational performance work with Contact Improvisation.

With relaxed alertness and readiness to "fall into movement and touch" we approach the mysterious and subjective thing called inspiration.

Class ingredients: musicality, space awareness, group mind, deep play.

The workshop is open to all levels of experience but will best fit those who like to work with focus and some physical and emotional challenge.

"Katarina is extremly generous in her style of teaching, although maintaining the workshops very presice and articulate. She seem to belive in a very democratic form of sharing her information and knowledge where each individual in the group is important as well as the group as a whole. Her teaching and workshops improves and informs a strong physical presence and capacity of each paricipant. Her style is technical as well as playful. Her work is challenging, extremly beneficial and highly inspiering to both body and mind."

Helle Siljeholm, dancer/choreographer, Oslo, Norway

The training with Katarina was soothing, relaxing and opening up unknown spaces in the body, creating new energies within the individual and group choreography. No pushing or exaggerated ambition, but working with what is coming up, and that was a lot! It was a wonderful, inspiring experience. She created a great energy within the group and gave me a lot of new input for my work (and my life!!)."

Dominique, dance teacher, Berlin

"Katarina's workshop was a great inspiration. In her sensitive way she taught us a creative approach to moving and dancing - an approach which takes into account your own physical and emotional "set-up". So even as a non-professional dancer I could always follow. Katarina created an atmosphere in the group which was marked by respect,

mutual consideration and friendly feelings. I enjoyed exploring new ways of moving, finding out which is my very own way of dancing and having a harmonious exchange with others. And of course we also had a lot of fun."

Carolin, Berlin
